Responsible adventures Day 1 Winnipeg is home to the largest French community west of the great lakes. An Old Saint-Boniface Walking Tour with Ô Tours takes you into the French Quarter, where the history, language, folklore and traditions of the French- Canadian settlers live on. Spend the day discovering the joie de vivre of this historic and vibrant community. Start the tour with the viewing of a lively film that tells of 200 years of history. Next, visit Saint-Boniface Basilica, one of Winnipeg's most iconic buildings. Enter the ruins of the old basilica, destroyed by fire in 1968, and see how the remnants have been integrated into the new church. Afterwards, enjoy a guided tour of Saint-Boniface Museum, the oldest building in Western Canada. This former convent of the Grey Nuns houses the largest collection of Louis Riel artifacts. After a delicious lunch, finish off the afternoon at Fort Gibraltar, a replica of the original fur trade fort, where costumed interpreters tell of the lives of the voyageurs during the fur trade era and learn how it contributed to the development of our province. Day 2 Assiniboine Park Zoo's Journey to Churchill is the world's foremost Arctic species exhibit and home to a state-of-the-art research facility on Northern animals and ecosystems. At its Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre your group will learn from experts—who star in CBC Television's Arctic Vets—about polar bear conservation efforts, polar bear denning, diets and behaviours, along with climate change issues that are affecting bears in the wild. At FortWhyte Alive, Winnipeg's award-winning nature reserve, group eco tours combine nature, history and culture. On its Canadian Signature Experience tour, A Prairie Legacy: The Bison and its People, you'll get up-close to a large bison herd, hear historical anecdotes in a Plains Cree Tipi, explore wetlands on a massive voyageur canoe, cook bannock over a fire, and learn how the area's original Indigenous people utilized bison in everyday life.
