advantages of Winnipeg from companies based in France and the United States. Building local relationships with foreign-owned companies We began connecting with foreign-owned companies located in the Winnipeg region to better understand businesses' opportunities and challenges. To date, our FDI team has identified 123 foreign companies with operations in Manitoba. Approximately 57 per cent of these companies are based in the United States, making this country the largest source of foreign investments in Manitoba, followed by France, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany. Strengthening federal relationships FDI strengthened its relationships with federal partners including Global Affairs Canada and Invest in Canada in 2021. This partnership meant nine per cent of foreign investment leads coming to Winnipeg came from federal partners. Our Director of FDI was appointed as Chair of the Business Development Committee at the Consider Canada City Alliance (CCCA) in early 2021. The CCCA unites 14 of Canada's largest municipal regions, which collectively works to attract foreign investment to Canada based upon the collective strength of each member's ecosystem. In this role, our director shared and captured best practices on FDI attraction alongside representatives from other Canadian municipalities. Building local capacity in Team Manitoba Our team continued its work to better align with Manitoba organizations that were working with foreign investors and promoting Winnipeg internationally. We worked collaboratively with partners including the Province of Manitoba and CentrePort Canada. Talent & Workforce Development Through our Business Expansion Retention (BRE) meetings with businesses in 2021, we know the pandemic impacted businesses' ability to attract, retain and develop talent, resulting in slowed growth. We also know that businesses made the decision to continue to invest in Winnipeg because of the accurate data and talent insights we provided. Our team focused on continuous improvement and enhancement of the Talent Hub, a one-stop-shop to access tools, resources and guidance for attracting talent. The Talent Hub includes the following features: Marketing resources Marketing resources are critical for companies trying to sell Winnipeg. We have created a toolkit with compelling, high- quality videos, tailored images and data to help companies compete for skilled workers on a global scale, including: » A talent settlement guide to help newcomers settle quickly. » A Quality-of-Life sell sheet explaining the Winnipeg advantage. » Video testimonials featuring individuals who chose to call Winnipeg home. Talent connections We provide businesses with links to a curated list of local, national and international organizations that provide talent services. Our talent team consistently meets with all the organizations to ensure we are offering the best services and provide businesses with meaningful insights and referrals. Sophisticated job matching We continued to work with Magnet, a sophisticated job matching platform first developed out of Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in 2014. We continued to customize and improve our job connections portal for Winnipeg, which is a platform that connects employers to national and international talent pools. It is free and easy to use, allowing businesses to access post-secondary recruitment systems and aggregated jobs from Indeed and Canada Jobs Bank. It also allows our team to send marketing messages to all registered businesses and job seekers while capturing data, allowing us to measure the impact of our talent attraction campaigns. We can also use it to advise Business Development and FDI clients on how to leverage the platform to attract job seekers and provide advice on how to connect with federal and provincial immigration officials. 19 2021 ANNUAL REPORT
