WINNIPEG… AS SEEN ON TV AND THE BIG SCREEN While Winnipeg might not (yet) be Hollywood North, we're still the backdrop of so many Hollywood productions and television shows, along with being a hallmark location for Hallmark and Lifetime films. The streets of the Exchange District regularly fill in for New York and Chicago, while wholesome Hallmark can't get enough of the stately character homes of River Heights, along with our beautiful outdoor settings which they often blanket with fake snow. Plus, we've been referenced so many times in shows ranging from Futurama to The Simpsons to The Office. Here are just a few of the productions where you can play "spot that Winnipeg location" on your favourite streaming service. Hollywood Features The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – This picture brought some of Hollywood's biggest names to town, including Brad Pitt in his heartthrob days. To stage numerous scenes in the film, parts of The Exchange District were transformed into a circa 1870s Missouri town. Capote – The late great Philip Seymour Hoffman won the Academy Award for his title role in this 2004 feature. Winnipeg plays the role of Kansas in the film, which was co-produced by Winnipeg company Eagle Vision Inc., who are also responsible for several productions on this page. Champions – In this 2023 feature starring Woody Harrelson, the production team doesn't try to hide the fact that its setting of Des Moines, Iowa, is actually Winnipeg. From establishing shots of the Manitoba Legislative Building to countless street scenes, this inspirational comedy was shot all over the city. Goon – This feature surprised many critics and is still certified 81 per cent fresh from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars Liev Schreiber, Seann William Scott and Jay Baruchel, highlighting locations like the legendary (but sadly now closed) Kelekis Restaurant in a family scene featuring Eugene Levy as William Scott's father.
