Shall We Dance? – The city was a stir when J.Lo was in town (with Richard Gere as her co-star nonetheless) for this toe-tapping feature film. This $75-million 2003 production featured numerous scenes in Winnipeg's Fort Garry neighbourhood, while much of the film's dancing takes place at the University of Manitoba's Taché Hall. Films and television shows where Winnipeg is the star One of the largest local productions of late was Stand! (2019), a musical which tells the story of the famed 1919 Winnipeg General Strike through a 'star-crossed lovers' sort of lens. The film stars Glee's Marshall Williams and was written by locals Danny Schur and Rick Chafe, adapted from Schur's acclaimed Rainbow Stage play, with many pivotal scenes shot right on the streets where the drama unfolded more than a century ago. Lovesick (2016) was the directorial debut of local filmmaker Tyson Caron and it truly is an ode to the city—being both staged and shot here (the term used by lead actor Jacob Tierney is "ferociously Winnipeg"). It stars Jessica Paré (Mad Men) and the aforementioned Jay Baruchel, while Winnipegger Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) also did the Canadian Screen Award-nominated music for the film. CBC Television's legal drama series Burden of Truth (2018–2021) spent all four of its seasons in Winnipeg and the surrounding area, with characters—like its star Kristin Kreuk—often name-dropping restaurants and locations. CBC Television also shot both seasons of Arctic Vets at Assiniboine Park Zoo (and up north in the Arctic), which stars the zoo's veterinarian and research team doing their actual jobs. On the comedy front, the television shows Less Than Kind and Sunnyside are all set here, while Fred Penner's Place—starring the legendary local troubadour—was filmed in Winnipeg from 1985 to 1997. Finally, My Winnipeg, by acclaimed local auteur Guy Maddin, is a surreal masterpiece (which has a 94 per cent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes) that mythologizes the city, featuring everything from horses frozen into the Red River to how the city's inhabitants are namely all sleepwalkers and the greatest ode to the old Winnipeg Arena's urinal trough.
