Oil paintings in the museum illustrate highlights of his life; other artwork illustrate his literary work. Protected in 1968, this preserve is home to more than 160 species of prairie plants and a great array of prairie wildlife. Less than one per cent of tall grass prairie remains in North America. The Living Prairie Museum is one of the few remaining fragments of this once vast ecosystem.
