GAME ON
The Nestaweya River Trail is one of the world's longest
naturally frozen skating trails. It made the Guinness Book
of World Records in 2008 when it was 8.54 kilometres long.
In 2017, the river trail was expanded even further to over 10 km.
Pine Street, in Winnipeg's West End, was home to three WWI
soldiers who received the Victoria Cross for their bravery
in battle. The street was renamed Valour Road in honour of
these three courageous citizens and is now also the name
of our professional soccer team, Valour FC who play in the
Canadian Premier League.
Winnipeg has produced some of the biggest names
in wrestling including legends "Rowdy" Roddy Piper,
Kenny Omega (perhaps the most-celebrated non-Japanese
wrestler in Japan), and multiple WCW, WWE and AEW
champion Chris Jericho.
On top of producing hundreds of NHL hockey players,
other notable Winnipeg professional athletes include former
NFL star defensive end Israel Idonije, who started his career
with the U of M Bisons; Olympic champion soccer player
Desiree Scott; legendary Olympic and World champion curler
Jennifer Jones; NBA centre Todd MacCulloch; and of course,
Terry Fox, whose inspiring Marathon of Hope has raised more
than $850 million toward cancer research.
