EVERGREEN The Leaf, a massive new horticultural attraction in Assiniboine Park, features Canada's tallest indoor waterfall in its Tropical Biome. Its Mediterranean Biome houses wollemi pines, a species of tree once thought to be extinct but now considered a living fossil, as they date back to the Cretaceous period when the final dinosaurs roamed the earth. Winnipeg's Living Prairie Museum is one of the few remaining unplowed native tall grass reserves in North America. It features over 160 species of prairie plants and wildlife. FortWhyte Alive is home to the largest urban bison herd in Canada with 30 to 40 calling this nature oasis home. Winnipegger Charlie Alloway is credited with helping to save the bison from extinction. His 13 "pet" bison became part of the animal's nationwide population regrowth. The Forks uses the leftover vegetable oil from the deep fryers at its on-site restaurants and food kiosks to power its site truck, reefer, ice resurfacer and three gators as part of their Target Zero program.
