INDIGENOUS EXPERIENCES Supporting Indigenous-owned and operated businesses is reconciliation in action (which is most fitting, as the city is also home to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation). The following experiences, attractions, hotels and eateries are owned and run by Indigenous Peoples or created in close consultation. Where to eat Feast Café Bistro • feastcafebistro.com Chef/owner Christa Bruneau-Guenther's Feast has been operating since 2016, turning the born-and-raised Winnipegger and member of the Peguis First Nation into a national star for her approach to First Nations cuisine. Manoomin at the Wyndham Garden Winnipeg Airport wyndhamgardenwinnipeg.com/dining Executive chef Jennifer Ballantyne comes from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and on her Manoomin menu you'll find delicious comforting dishes featuring bannock, bison and local fish. Bistro on Notre Dame bistroonnotredame.com This West End gem focuses on localvore dining, including plenty of game and interesting takes on brunch from Métis chef-owner Dean Herkert. Promenade Brasserie promenadebrasserie.ca Features a locally sourced menu inspired by chef-owner Jay Lekopoy's Métis heritage, which isn't shy about bringing flavour and spice. You can't beat the dining room and patio views of downtown's skyline. Sharecuterie • sharecuteriewpg.com This cute cafe by Ojibway owner Cassandra Carreiro allows you to create customizable charcuterie, cheese and vegetarian boards that flaunt a wide range of local products. Great coffee, wine and cocktails onsite too! Shelly's Indigenous Bistro facebook.com/shellybistro Specializes in pizza and fried chicken with an Indigenous twist, including huge bannock pizzas designed by Ojibway owner Vince Bignell, a member of Mathias Colomb Cree Nation (Pukatawagan). La Brasserie Nonsuch Brewing Co. nonsuch.beer Co-owner and CEO Matthew Sabourin is a Manitoba Métis Federation member. The brewery won the Indigenous Culinary Tourism award at ITAC's 2024 Indigenous Tourism Awards for its outstanding culinary offerings, which includes national award-winning beers, Canada's best burger, and the Beer Bannock Hands-On Experience, which explains the company's Métis history while you make beer-infused Bannock. Attractions and festivals Agowiidiwinan Centre • trcm.ca Agowiidiwinan, meaning "bringing things together," is a new facility at The Forks created by the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba. The Centre uses oral histories, archival documents and displays to foster contemporary understanding of treaties.
