In 1978, the Trappists moved to a site near Holland, Manitoba, to protect their contemplative life from the effects of urban sprawl. Fire gutted the vacated church and residential wing five years later. Information about the Trappist monks and the monastery is on display at the remaining ruins. Here, the representatives of the people of Assiniboia looked beyond quarrels rooted in language, religion and national origin to vote to join the confederation of Canada, leading to the creation of the Province of Manitoba in 1870. The original Hudson Bay Company fort was demolished between 1881 and 1888. Only the gate, a National Historic Site, survived and it continues to stand sentinel today. New life surrounds the gate as the brand new Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park, proclaimed in 2014, sits ready to welcome you into the north and west portion of the fort. Using today's technology, come explore and learn more about the buildings and people that once populated Upper Fort Garry. Further renewal of the area outside the west wall is planned and work continues on future exciting additions.
