Page 46 It's our Time It's our Time Legacy Plan - Saskatoon Saskatoon legacy Saskatoon and Saskatchewan are proud supporters of junior hockey. With five Western Hockey league franchises (Moose Jaw Warriors, prince Albert Raiders, Swift Current Broncos, Regina pats and the Saskatoon Blades) and the 11-team Saskatchewan Junior Hockey league, it's no wonder Saskatchewan has produced more professional hockey players per capita than any other province in Canada. As with the 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, the portion of the profits that will remain with Saskatoon's host committee will be shared with our hockey community, to further the development of the sport at all levels. Saskatoon has identified the following organizations to support, ensuring the development of hockey for years to come. Saskatchewan hockey association The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) is an active member of Hockey Canada and has a membership of approximately 200 minor hockey associations throughout the province of Saskatchewan, including approximately 45,000 players, team officials and referees. Their mission is to lead, develop and promote positive hockey experiences. The SHA's SaskFirst program provides a better understanding of the game, and promotes the development of quality players, coaches, trainers, officials and administrators. It was created to ensure not only players, but coaches and officials all receive ample opportunity for development both on and off the ice. The program is unique, as no other provincial branch offers such an in-depth developmental program that covers all personnel within a hockey team. The emphasis of this program is that everyone must pursue their personal goals within the team environment and no one individual is more important than the team. Team success comes from everyone melding their talents, skills and energies toward the achievement of the team's goals. Saskatoon minor hockey association The Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) is the starting point for all hockey players in our city. With over 300 teams for children aged 5 – 18, the SMHA is proud to offer programs for players of all abilities. The SMHA is one of the few minor hockey associations in Canada and the only association in Saskatchewan to offer competitive No Body Checking Hockey leagues for players in the Bantam and Midget age groups. Skill development is the primary focus of the SMHA and one of the reason's they're one of the most successful minor hockey associations in the country. home ice capital campaign at the university of Saskatchewan The Home Ice Capital Campaign is an initiative to raise the necessary funding to build a new twin-plex arena on the university of Saskatchewan campus. The two arenas will be shared by Huskie Athletics CIS men's and women's ice hockey programs, and the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association. Elite and developmental hockey programs will be offered out of the new facility, with public skating times for the general public. The new twin-plex will be the perfect fit for national championships, such as Hockey Canada's Telus Cup, Esso Cup and the RBC Cup. Saskatoon Sports tourism Saskatoon Sports Tourism is the driving force behind the bidding and hosting of championship events. Our city has hosted the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, MasterCard Memorial Cup, university Cup, Keystone Cup, and countless others. It has been shown that after hosting major championship events, the registration numbers in those sports increases. We want to ensure that people in Saskatoon remain excited about hockey by exposing them to the best of the best. proceeds retained by Saskatoon Sports Tourism will be used to attract other national hockey championships to our city.
