Winnipeg is home to the largest French-speaking community west of the Great Lakes. This tour takes you across the river into St. Boniface, the city's French Quarter, where the language, folklore, traditions, and history of the first French-Canadian settlers live on. Originating with the fur trade and early settlement, the francophone history in Manitoba is entrenched in Manitoba's mosaic – drenched in stories of perseverance, struggles and rebellion, and preserved through stories, laughter, music and an infectious joie de vivre. Spend the day discovering this historic and dynamic community, just minutes from downtown Winnipeg. Start your tour with a visit to the St. Boniface Cathedral, the former head of Catholic churches in Western Canada and one of Manitoba's most photographed sites. Learn the story of how the cathedral came to be, and enter the ruins to see how the old has been integrated with the new. See the history of the parish and its parishioners brought to life in a live theatrical performance by the troupe Theatre in the Cemetery. Afterwards, walk over and visit the St. Boniface Museum, which is the former Grey Nuns' convent, the oldest remaining structure in Winnipeg, and the largest oak log structure in North America. A visit to the French Quarter would not be complete without a traditional French-Canadian lunch, so you'll be given the option to select from a list of local restaurants for a farm-to- table meal or a private lunch at Fort Gibraltar. In the afternoon, visit historic Fort Gibraltar, a full-scale trading post where costumed interpreters recreate and share with you their lives in the fur trade in 1815. Try your hand at hatchet throwing, bake bannock around a camp fire and experience what life was like for the Voyageurs and first francophone settlers who braved the Canadian wilderness – and won! End your day with a choice between visiting one of the coffee shops, a stop at a world- renowned chocolatier, or quench your thirst and meet some local folk at a watering hole on Provencher Boulevard, St. B's main commercial drag. Lots of surprises, discovery and plenty of joie de vivre await you in Saint-Boniface, Winnipeg's French Quarter. conversion 1 km = 0.62 mile DRIVING DISTANCE TO WINNIPEG Distance (km) Brandon, MB 200 Regina, SK 574 Saskatoon, SK 777 Edmonton, AB 1,302 Calgary, AB 1,329 Vancouver, BC 2,372 Thunder Bay, ON 702 Toronto, ON 2,079 Ottawa, ON 2,171 Montréal, QC 2,291 Québec City, QC 2,535 Located in the geographical centre of Canada and North America, Winnipeg is a culturally diverse, creative and thriving prairie city.
