5 LEGENDS TALES • Volume 7, 2018/2019 Diversity Gardens Canada's Diversity Gardens at Assiniboine Park is set to open in September 2020, and will tell the cultural story of the relationships that exist between people and plant life using plants as the medium. This indoor and outdoor garden will represent a fresh take on the blending of culture, diversity, plant collections, horticulture displays, and community gathering space all in one location. Upcoming Anniversaries 40 th anniversary Manitoba Marathon: one of the flattest courses in the country makes this race an excellent Boston Marathon qualifier. 50 th anniversary Festival du Voyageur (2019): Western Canada's largest winter celebration promises exciting programming for their golden anniversary. 100 th anniversary Winnipeg General Strike (2019): Canada's best-known general stroke for a brief period of time in summer 1919. See page 18 for more. 150 th anniversary Manitoba's birthday (2020): mark your editorial calendars, more details to come. On the Horizon True North Square/Sutton Place Hotel Luxury property Sutton Place Hotels is opening a hotel in 2021 across from the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. The property is part of a transformative new $500-million downtown plaza, True North Square, which is now under construction. Amenities will include enclosed skywalks, boutiques, restaurants, and green space, breathing new life and vibrancy into the city's core. Manitoba Museum Renovation Over 40 per cent of the museum's galleries are set to upgrade along with the construction of a new Winnipeg Gallery with the official opening planned for 2020 to coincide with the 350th anniversary of Hudson Bay Company (museum is home to the HBC Museum Collection) and the Manitoba Museum's 50th anniversary. New Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada The new building, opening in 2019, will be located at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and will feature nine exhibition galleries, a kids centre, library, and workshop, among other facilities. Inuit Art Centre To celebrate Inuit art, the people who make it, and the lands from which they come, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is building the Inuit Art Centre, the first of its kind in the world. A 40,000-square-foot cultural landmark that will include a visible vault, theatre and gallery.
