45 2017 Annual Report Market Intelligence – Content Repository A restructuring of EDW's content portfolio is underway that will see the development of a more functional content repository. The repository will facilitate EDW's need for accurate and timely market profile data and analysis, which will also serve to support product development for EDW's sales teams. EDW has completed the final migration of file documents into the SharePoint platform. This will enable the staff to have a 360-degree view of all active EDW files, more effectively track all EDW content, and provide greater functionality in terms of managing multiple team files. Additionally, EDW has added an economist and market analyst to its staff which will enhance our research and analytical capabilities. Input/Output Return on Investment (ROI) Model EDW, through third party consulting support, has developed a ROI Model. The model was developed to help EDW evaluate the economic impact or ROI on proposed private sector investments. The model will provide a high level evaluation on an investment's economic impact based on a number of variables including number of jobs, payroll and capital investment. Winnipeg Smart City Caucus: Open Data Working Group Several years ago, Economic Development Winnipeg established the Winnipeg Smart City Caucus, which brought together a broad cross section of community stakeholders focused on Smart City principles. As an extension of this caucus EDW formed a working group to specifically target actions related to government Open Data. EDW's view was that by tapping into, harnessing and directing Manitoba's public sector data, Winnipeg and Manitoba would become a smarter, more connected, more inclusive and ultimately more prosperous community. The working group has submited a position paper relative to the current legislative review of Manitoba's Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FIPPA) and the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA). EDW Smart/Intelligent City Activities EDW facilitated a meeting between the director general of the federal government's Smart Cities Challenge and the mayor regarding the up-coming Smart City Challenge. This is a $300 million program where cities will submit proposals to secure project funding. EDW will be facilitating the development of the Winnipeg proposal. EDW also submitted a proposal to the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), to compete for the Intelligent Community of the Year designation for 2018. On October 27 it was announce by ICF that Winnipeg was selected as one of the Smart 21 cities which advances Winnipeg to compete for the Top 7 Intelligent Community designation. If successful Winnipeg will be in the running to be selected to the 2018 Intelligent Community of the Year designation which will be announced in June 2018. Winnipeg has made it to the top seven twice before. Advanced Manufacturing Working Group The Advanced Manufacturing Working Group, jointly initiated by EDW in partnership with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), is moving to formalize its efforts in promoting the importance of the advanced manufacturing sector in growing Manitoba's future economy. The working group is looking to enhance the province's understanding of the importance of advanced manufacturing to the economy and offer meaningful recommendations that can support the province's economic development objectives. The working group meets monthly to refine its promotional efforts and validate key advanced manufacturing technologies and capabilities in Manitoba, as well as identify existing gaps. The coalition is co-chaired by EDW and CME. New Federal Government Investment Hub EDW has been providing input to the federal department of Global Affairs Canada regarding a new Investment HUB which is being set up by the federal government to guide their Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) activities. EDW is providing insights into FDI opportunities in Winnipeg, as well as highlighting focus areas that the new Investment HUB should consider. EDW is leveraging its input through its membership in Consider Canada City Alliance (CCCA) which includes the economic development agencies from Canada's 13 largest metropolitan areas.
