61 61 Students will study through classroom-based course work and lab-based lunchtime fine dining service in Jane's restaurant. Students will also obtain certifications in First Aid and It's Good Business. In the second year of the program, students will select a major course of study in one of two areas: » The Hotel and Restaurant Management major focuses primarily on developing skills to work in the food and beverage and accommodation areas of the tourism industry. The courses are delivered from a management perspective and include classroom and lab based course work. Hospitality Simulation offered in the final term is the capstone course in which you work in teams to resolve a variety of case studies, drawing on your academic and work experience from previous terms. » The Tourism Management major concentrates on building skills in a variety of business models in a variety of Tourism sub-sectors including attractions, events and tourism services. Red River College also offers an event planning course as part of the business administration program. Manitoba Tourism Education Council (MTEC) also provides training to all organizations within the tourism and hospitality industry, including festivals and events. Seminars and education series include topics such as communication, risk management, human resources, professionalism, business etiquette, building a health and safety program, social media, disability sensitivity – creating an inclusive workplace, cultural considerations, business insurance, emergency preparedness, first- aid & CPR Level C, ergonomics in the workplace, event coordination 101, leadership, handling conflict, marketing, media planning, goal setting, preparing a business plan, presentation and phone skills, financial literacy, sales, teambuilding, time management, Winnipeg BEST ambassador, employee retention and more. MTEC also offers emerit training and certification, which is developed by and for the Canadian tourism industry and focuses on assessing not only a person's combined knowledge and skills, but their ability to demonstrate these assets in the workplace or in other relevant contexts. Certification from emerit recognizes an individual's competence in their occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Professional certification is available for dozens of frontline and supervisory occupations, providing a marketable credential for both those just starting out in their occupation and seasoned veterans of the tourism industry. Professional certification from emerit is also offered for select management level occupations, and is a valuable tool for advancing a tourism and hospitality management career, owning and operating a small- or medium-sized business, or refreshing and honing professional skills and knowledge. St. Boniface University has a diploma program in Tourism Management.
