Energy and environment Manitoba's energy sector GDP contributions were $5.93 billion in 2018 1 . This $5.93 billion was represented largely by the utilities, oil and gas extraction and electric power industries, which accounted for nearly 70 per cent of provincial energy GDP 1 . The Winnipeg CMA region has approximately 10,400 employees 1 at 2,135 energy and environmental companies 1 . Over the last year, employment increased by almost 10 per cent from 9,500 employees in 2017 to 10,400 employees in 2018. Subsector focus Waste management and remediation services, renewable energy Target markets/audiences Businesses, site selectors and CEOs in the energy and environment sector Primary Canada and United States Industry collaboration YES! Winnipeg (YW) will continue to be an active supporter and collaborator with key industry partners such as: Manitoba Environmental Industries Association (MEIA) Strike a good collaborative relationship with organizations that have strong connections to the industry. MEIA hosts a few networking/training/industry events throughout the year. Bioscience Association of Manitoba (BAM) An organization with strong connections to industry, who are eager to build collaborative relationships. As they have expanded their mandate to include clean biotech, there is crossover with energy and environment. International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) Headquartered in Winnipeg, with offices in Ottawa, New York and Geneva. Global Affairs Canada (GAC)/Trade Commissioner Service and Invest in Canada Having collaborated with GAC on past events, there remains the possibility of future FDI partnerships with investment officers, based on their visits to Winnipeg in 2018. Province of Manitoba (Economic Development & Training, Economic Development Office) Continue our work to support key files related to client requirements and funding programs. City of Winnipeg Support on client files related to permitting, tax increment financing, and other requests. Government of Canada Funding for program support where relevant. Post-secondary institutions (University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Red River College, Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology) Pursue talent development and collaboration with industry to meet skilled workforce requirements. Business development activities YW's business development activities include prospecting, in-person meetings, follow-up calls, relationship building, presentations, proposals and pitches, tracking, customized site inspections and servicing. Business retention and expansion Twenty-three local companies have been identified for business retention and expansion (BRE) interviews and intelligence gathering, for actionable insights and services offered. For 2020, zero BRE interviews are slated to take place as this is a secondary sector. Sector activities ยป Not undertaking any proactive activities with the energy and environment sector.
