Foreign investment in Winnipeg A key opportunity Winnipeg is pursuing in the months and years to come is a bigger slice of the foreign direct investment (FDI) pie for our city and province. FDI is a key driver of economic growth and represents a significant opportunity to attract new capital, job creation, innovation and talent to our jurisdiction. Our FDI team is focused on increasing the visibility of Winnipeg on the world stage to capture more high-quality investment opportunities to the city. As we start to look beyond the pandemic and recovery, competition will ramp up as large cities around the world vie for investors' attention. Every city offers key incentives such as tax credits, grants, startup assistance or loans. Every location also offers a dedicated team with access to data, market intelligence and qualified contacts. A significant Winnipeg advantage over other jurisdictions is our ability to easily connect potential investors to a tight-knit and collaborative business community. Within a matter of hours, we can gather the city's top CEOs around a table, who can speak to the strengths of this city and all it offers. On top of leveraging the expertise of a number of key partners, our team has built an FDI Toolbox that contains a number of resources to identify the markets, companies, contacts and an overview of the business environment to guide the investment attraction efforts for YW in 2021. We work closely with federal organizations such as Global Affairs Canada and Invest in Canada to promote Winnipeg as an ideal location for foreign investment. Global Affairs Canada oversees the network of Canadian embassies and consulates around the world, effectively giving Canada more 'boots on the ground' to increase trade and investment to our country. Invest in Canada is the federal agency tasked with marketing the particular strengths of Canadian cities to the world and increasing foreign investment.
