Page 48 APPENDIX C Manitoba Marathon Extreme/Severe Heat & Humidity Contingency Plan For On Course Volunteers In the event of an extreme severe weather occurrence, the following measures will be taken to protect the safety of participants and volunteers. 1. Prior to race start: The start may be delayed to assess the situation for up to one hour; with reassessments completed every 15 minutes. Updates will be provided to all communication links and to the public every 15 minutes. 2. During the race: If conditions move into the black zone (dangerous heat and humidity) during the race, hospitality station personnel will approach people in the community and ask them to help provide water stations to cool runners (set out their sprinklers, hoses, etc.) 3. Decision to accelerate course closing: The decision to accelerate the close or to stop the race will rest with the Emergency Committee which will consist of medical team captains, Manitoba Marathon Chairperson, Manitoba Marathon Technical Coordinator and the Manitoba Marathon Executive Director or, if expediency is necessary, the decision will be made by the Manitoba Marathon Executive Director. 4. In the event of an accelerated course closing: All hospitality stations will be notified of the accelerated closing through broadcasts by the Communications team (amateur radio operators). Medical personnel and hospitality station volunteers will relay the following information to participants: "We have dangerous heat and humidity conditions, the Manitoba Marathon is moving into an accelerated course closure mode. The course will be officially closed when you see the "official course closing vehicle". For the safety of all, please board the Sweep Bus as it progresses along the course. The bus will return you to the U of M Stadium." Hospitality Stations will remain open until they are passed by the course closing vehicle and officially confirmed to be closed by notification from the COMM Centre. At no time should any participant be physically stopped except where warranted and only by a medical volunteer.
